The Berlin Wall The Berlin Wall is a total of 96 miles long and borders between East and West Berlin. There are 302 watch towers throughout the wall and about 20 bunkers. There was about 192 people killed on the wall and 200 injured by shooting. The Berlin Wall construction started in the night of August 13, 1961 while everyone else was asleep. There was a second wall that was built in June of 1962 so they could prevent from escaping to the West. The third wall was started in about 1965 and consist of concrete slabs. The government had to put up the wall to prevent the Germans escaping to West Berlin or West Germany. The Topographie des Terrors is also part of the Berlin Wall. This is a magnificent attraction in Berlin. This exhibit is located on what was once the headquarters of the Gestapo and SS. You start reading at one end and proceed reading down the wall. The information on the wall consist of the trials of the men who tried to kill the Jewish people and what they were exactly accused of as well as who accused them and who their lawyers were. The trials were recounted many times and in detail. All the men had different accusations but all the crimes were war related. Some of the men gave statements at the end of the trails and said sorry but a lot of them said they did the right thing. You will also find pictures of the lawyers on the wall who had to defend the guilty. There is so much to learn from this wall and is very interesting and insightful.
